Logan Tee Replacements and Hydrants Package 2018/19

Overview

The PBE043 project involved replacement of existing water infrastructure to upgrade the Logan City Council (LCC) water network to current Australian Standards. The project involved selected tee replacement of pre-1980 iron fittings due to internal tuberculation, which was impacting on hydraulic performance, particularly fire-flows at hydrants. The selected tees were replaced with new valve, tee and hydrant arrangements, which increased the reliability and efficiency of the water network.

Works Undertaken

Construction and commissioning of:

  • Exhumation, removal and replacement of 133 ageing asbestos tees with new DICL fittings, including hydrants tee, and valves
  • Removal and replacement of approximately 10 asbestos tees and cross connection arrangements to intersections, including trenching of new pipework across roadways, traffic control and pedestrian management (live works)
  • Removal and reinstatement of over of 450m2 of concrete footpath, including construction of 13 pram ramps to LCC’s standards
  • Ancillary works, including temporary water services to residential, commercial and industrial premises, stakeholder and community management, turf reinstatement, traffic management, live network connections and disinfection and pressure testing of newly installed infrastructure

Highlights, Innovations and Key Risks

  • Project finished on schedule, despite issues with failed water shutdowns
  • Multiple works fronts with ever changing site conditions
  • No underground service strikes for duration of the project
  • Successful installation of fittings in vicinity of high-pressure gas, under supervision of an APA spotter
  • Dedicated restoration crew to minimise time between construction works and final restoration
  • High quality of works, with minimal defects when completing handover walk-throughs
